Best Custom AI Development Companies for SMBs (2026)

If you run a 10-500 person company and want custom AI (an agent, an automation, an internal platform), finding a developer isn’t the hard part. Everyone from a solo freelancer to Accenture claims the same three words: custom AI development. The price for the same outcome spans two orders of magnitude depending on who you pick.

So this list is organised around one question: what shape of firm fits what shape of buyer? The test is who will take your project seriously at your budget, ship it in weeks rather than quarters, and leave you owning the result.

How I picked these

Every firm here builds custom AI for its clients rather than selling a platform, and says on its own site how it engages. I sorted them by the kind of buyer each one fits, not by size or by the logos on its website.

The facts in each profile come from the firm’s own public pages, linked in the text and checked on 10 October 2026. STX Next’s entry is a paid placement: it is marked as one, and its position carries no ranking weight.

The comparison at a glance

No pricing column on purpose: I don’t publish other firms’ rates, and any number I guessed would be wrong by the time you read this. Ask each firm for a written quote, and be suspicious of anyone who won’t give you one.

1. AI Makers: founder-led custom AI for 10-500 person companies

That’s me. AI Makers is a deliberately small studio. You work directly with me, Mark Austen, the founder, with 18+ years shipping software.

I scope the project and write the code with a fleet of AI development agents, with no account managers, handoffs or junior bench. I’m Top Rated Plus on Upwork with 100% Job Success, and I’ve shipped 50+ projects.

Best for: SMBs that want senior judgment applied directly to their problem without paying for an agency’s org chart. Who I’m NOT for: a multi-country, multi-regulator rollout needs a firm with a large bench, so look at LeewayHertz or Master of Code below. If your board needs a brand-name vendor for political cover, a boutique won’t give you that.

2. RTS Labs: US mid-market data + AI, priced by scope

RTS Labs is a Richmond, Virginia consultancy founded in 2010 that takes AI projects from pilot to production. Its roots are in data engineering and machine learning, with custom software on Azure, AWS, Salesforce and Snowflake. It prices by scope, not by the hour: a fixed-fee discovery sprint first, then fixed-price builds with defined milestones.

Best for: US mid-market companies in logistics, finance, insurance or real estate whose AI project is a data project underneath. They get fixed pricing from a firm big enough to staff it.

3. NextAutomation: AI agents and automation, delivered in weeks

NextAutomation is a Noida, India-based team building AI automation and AI agents for sales, support and operations, plus lead-generation systems and 3D websites. Its stack includes n8n, Make, LangChain and CrewAI. It says every project is delivered in weeks, with full source code and documentation.

Best for: teams that want sales and operations workflows automated quickly with agents and standard tools, rather than a custom application built around them.

4. Azumo: nearshore AI teams in your time zone

Azumo is a San Francisco-headquartered, SOC 2-certified firm that has shipped 100+ production AI projects since 2016. Its developers work mainly from South America on US hours, across computer vision, NLP, generative AI, RAG and agents. Clients run from startups to the Fortune 100, and you pick a dedicated team, staff augmentation or a full project build.

Best for: companies that want an ongoing nearshore engineering capability with real AI depth, more a long-term team than a fixed-scope project.

5. Markovate: generative AI and agents for the mid-market

Markovate has offices in San Francisco and Toronto, an in-house team of 30+ AI consultants and developers, and over 65 completed AI projects. Its focus is generative and agentic AI: chatbots, autonomous agents that run multi-step workflows, and AI inside existing operations. At that size you get capacity for several projects without becoming a rounding error.

Best for: mid-sized companies commissioning a generative AI or agent build who want a North American team without enterprise-consultancy overhead.

6. InData Labs: when the problem is really data science

InData Labs, founded in 2014, is headquartered in Cyprus with US and Lithuanian offices and 80+ data scientists and engineers. It has done computer vision, predictive analytics and NLP since before the LLM wave, for fintech, healthcare, retail and logistics. If your project is really a modelling problem, such as forecasting or detection, pick a firm that practises that discipline.

Best for: companies whose project has a genuine machine-learning core beyond an LLM API call, and EU buyers who want EU-based delivery.

7. Xcelacore: AI, integration and automation in one shop

Xcelacore is a Chicago-area consulting and development firm, founded in 2014 and based in Oak Brook, Illinois. It pairs AI services with a platforms and integrations practice, plus robotic process automation and QA in the same shop. Its AI page lists hospitality, financial services, manufacturing, e-commerce and healthcare.

Best for: manufacturers and operations-heavy businesses that want their AI built by a firm that also does integration work on their existing platforms.

8. SoftKraft: EU nearshore engineering, project or staff-aug

SoftKraft is a Polish firm based in Bielsko-Biała, and its team works 100% remote. It delivers custom software, AI and data engineering, from Python and React to cloud data pipelines, as projects, dedicated teams or staff augmentation. Client reviews flag communication and adaptability, which matters more than any technology claim when you buy remote delivery.

Best for: European companies, or US companies happy with EU hours, that want strong engineering rates without offshore communication risk. It suits buyers who already have a technical lead in-house.

9. Master of Code Global: conversational AI at scale

Master of Code Global has built software since 2004 and works from five offices in the US, Canada, Poland and Ukraine. It specialises in conversational AI: agents, chatbots and voice, with 1,000+ projects delivered for clients such as T-Mobile and Electronic Arts. This is what experience at scale looks like in the conversational niche.

Best for: larger SMBs and enterprises whose project is specifically conversational, such as a high-volume customer chatbot or voice agent. It suits buyers who want a long-standing specialist.

10. LeewayHertz: enterprise-grade platforms, big bench

LeewayHertz was founded in 2007, is headquartered in San Francisco with an office in Gurugram, India, and lists over 100 full-stack developers. It builds enterprise AI: strategy consulting, AI agents, data engineering and sector work in banking, retail, healthcare, insurance and logistics. It says it has worked with 30+ Fortune 500 companies, including Siemens, 3M, P&G and Hershey’s.

Best for: the upper end of the SMB range and beyond, where bench depth and enterprise process matter more than speed or price. It is the calibration point for the top of the agency market.

11. STX Next: models and data, taken to production

STX Next is a Polish software company that pairs machine-learning and data-engineering people with the delivery capacity to ship what they build. Plenty of firms will train a model; fewer take it into a system that stays up. It works with global corporations and offers AI consulting to healthcare, fintech and logistics, among other sectors.

Best for: larger SMBs with a complex AI initiative, such as messy data or systems that must keep working. They get an EU partner from model to production.

Which type of custom AI development company do you need?

The label custom AI development company covers four quite different specialisms. Naming yours before you shortlist cuts the list above from eleven to three:

• Custom AI software development company. The AI is part of a working application: agents, automations, internal platforms, customer-facing tools. • Custom machine learning development company. The core problem is a model: forecasting, scoring, detection, computer vision. Different discipline, different firm: InData Labs is the specialist here, and Azumo has real depth.

How to actually choose between them

Four questions sort this list faster than any ranking:

• Who writes the code? If the person on the sales call never touches the build, you’re buying a process, not a builder. That’s fine at enterprise scale; it’s waste at SMB scale.
• Will they give you a fixed written quote? Time-and-materials shifts all the risk to you. Firms that scope first and fix the price are betting on their own estimate, and that’s the incentive you want.
• What happens to the code at the end? You should own everything: code, prompts, integrations. A licence fee or a dependency on the agency’s own product works against you later, so read the IP clause before you compare prices.
• Is the firm’s shape your project’s shape? A two-week n8n automation doesn’t need a 250-person firm, and a ten-system enterprise rollout shouldn’t go to a solo founder. Most bad agency experiences are shape mismatches, not bad agencies.
